AMC Entertainment is a movie theater chain headquartered in Leawood, Kansas, United States. Founded in 1920, AMC has the largest share of the U.S. theater market ahead of Regal Entertainment Group and Cinemark Theatres. AMC operates in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and Germany.
AMC Entertainment’s history dates back to 1917, when Edward Durwood started the Durwood Theatres Company in Kansas City, Missouri. By 1924, Durwood had acquired or built 24 theaters in the Midwest and Southwest and had changed the company name to Durwood Enterprises. In 1961, the United States Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Paramount Pictures, Inc. that movie studios could not own theaters outright, and as a result, Durwood divested his holdings, selling 12 theaters to Stanley Durwood, his son and future AMC CEO.
In 1968, Stanley Durwood took control of Durwood Enterprises, then renamed Durwood Theatres, and in 1973, he acquired the Midwest chain Mann Theatres. By 1976, Stanley Durwood had renamed Durwood Theatres to American Multi-Cinema, Inc. (AMC), and the company had grown to 50 theaters in the United States. In 1979, AMC was acquired by the Wanda Group, a Chinese conglomerate, and AMC’s growth continued. In 2002, AMC was taken private by a group of investors led by J.P. Morgan Partners. In 2006, AMC was acquired by a group of investors led by Apollo Global Management and The Carlyle Group, and taken public again.
In 2012, AMC Theatres announced a plan to build up to 300 dine-in theaters across the United States by the end of 2015. The first location opened in Harrison, Arkansas in 2013, and as of February 2015, AMC had opened 24 dine-in theaters.
